5 Great Home Business Ideas for Moms

Starting your own business can seem overwhelming. The good news, is that it doesn’t have to be. You don’t need a sizeable starting cash flow or investors lining up at your door. You can actually start a business with relatively little cash and do it all from your home. All it takes is hard work and a desire to succeed.

So now that the main question regarding cash is out of the way, what business should you start? The answer to this will be based off of what you enjoy, what your skills are, and what you can see yourself doing for an at home business. Below are just a handful of ideas to get you started.

1. Medical Coding

Medical Coding has incredible earning potential, although it will be a bit more challenging to get yourself started.

Medical coding requires training and coding software. Certifications are also needed as it will ensure potential clients of your validity.

As a medical coder, you’ll work with doctors’ offices and hospitals to code documents for insurance purposes. It is up to you to find these clients through networking opportunities and other marketing channels.

One of the biggest issues when starting a medical coding business is the amount of scams that target would-be medical coders. These scams promise to provide software, training, certification, and even clients providing you with incredible revenue. Always remember, if it seems too good to be true, it usually is.

2. Freelance Writing

Freelance writing requires almost no cash to get started. The basics to get started are a computer and email address.

The opportunity for freelance writing is abundant. Marketing firms and departments are beginning to create a plethora of content for their websites. With so much content to create, many marketing teams are turning to freelance writers to get the job done.

The range of topics available to write about are vast. You may be writing about technology, consumer goods, animals, sports, or even marketing. There are a handful of sites that connect you with work needed such as Guru, oDesk, and Textbroker.

Additionally, freelance writing could take you towards the non-profit sector. A grant writer helps connect funders and grant seekers.

3. Pet Sitter/Walker

If you’re an animal person, starting a pet sitting or dog walking business is right up your alley.

A pet owner never wants to leave their pet cooped up inside all day. However, most people are extremely busy with their jobs, their children’s activities, and more. Having the option to leave their dog with a pet sitter is a great alternative.

A great way to get started is through word of mouth. Letting your network know that you are starting a business and looking for clients will help to get the ball rolling. Consider working with apartment communities and home communities to spread flyers about your business.

Additional places to market your services are the dog park and retirement communities. A lot of pet owners at the dog park only get to take their dog there on occasion. Chances are they’ll want their dog out and about a lot more.

Retirement communities are a great place to start because many pet owners in these communities may lack the energy or capabilities to walk their dog.

4. Wedding Planner/Bridal Consultant

Creative, organized, detail oriented and level-headed moms make for great wedding planners. Starting a wedding planning business puts you in an industry that is never going away and only seems to spend more as time goes on.

Weddings have become extremely lavish over the years with increasingly larger budgets. A lot of details go into making a wedding a success and sometimes the bride can’t or doesn’t want to handle it herself. This is where her wedding planner comes in.

You’ll handle all aspects of the big day including tiny details such as table centerpieces all the way to large items such as venue deposits. It takes a very specific type of person to do this job but it can also be an incredibly fulfilling job.

5. Crafter: Sewing, Soap Making, etc.

By now, you’ve probably heard of Etsy. It is a crafter’s version of Amazon with beautifully displayed goods.

Another business venture for the creative mind is to start your own crafting business. Sewing, crocheting, soap making, and more are all different types of businesses a mom can start from home.

Homemade soap has become increasingly popular as consumers become more in-tune with what they are putting on their body. Organic soaps made with various herbs and ingredients make for soothing and deliciously scented baths.

Crafters can sell their goods online, at craft fairs, farmers markets and even through major distributors if you can make a decent splash with your product.

Overall, the possibilities for a home business are endless. These five are great starts and have been successful ventures for many moms out there. Now, it’s time to start your business.

A FINE PARENT (online)
afineparent.com
sumitha@afineparent.com
Guidelines: Write for us about Our Current Topic, which can be found online. Submit detailed outline by approximately the 4thof each month. I will let you know if your outline is accepted on approximately the 6th. The first draft of the full article is due by approximately the 13th. Payment will be made within 24 hours of receiving the final draft. Payment per accepted article is $100 + links + a shot at the annual bonus. (NOTE: This page is updated on the 1st of each month with a new topic and submission dates. Please sign up for notifications.) A Fine Parent is an online community for parents who believe that Great Parents are Made, Not Born. We focus on one topic each month that can help us become better people and better parents. Each week on the blog I publish one in-depth article related to the monthly topic. Initially, I wrote all the articles for this blog myself. After sharing a few readers stories and guest posts however, I realized just how much we can all benefit from shared wisdom and diverse voices. Hence this call for you to write for us. If you are constantly working on becoming a better parent, if you have a few hard-earned nuggets of wisdom under your sleeve, if you see another parent and instantly connect, AND if you happen to be a writer as well … boy, have we been waiting for you!

What We Look for In the Articles We Publish:
·         the article MUST offer practical and actionable advice/tips
·         the article MUST contain personal stories and anecdotes that connect with the other parents in our community (blah list posts won’t cut it)
·         the article MUST be written in web-format (well-organized; skimmable; short paragraphs; lists and bullets when possible; custom illustrations when possible)
·         the article MUST include references to books, research or other authoritative references (you can even link to articles on your own blog as long as it is relevant and offers value)
·         the article MUST be original and not published anywhere else before
·         the article MUST contain the mandatory “2-minute action plan” (contemplation/reflection questions) and the “long-term action plan” (specific action to take over the next week) sections at the bottom of the article (see the bottom of any article for samples)
·         Most articles on the blog are in the 1,500-2,500 words range. I prefer to stick to that range, but will make exceptions on a case-by-case basis.
By submitting the article you agree that if your article is published, I will retain the rights to republish or reuse the material in the future, of course with due credit to you. If you’re not familiar with the blog, please spend some time there to get a feel for it first. You may even consider joining our community and just watching what gets posted for a bit before you start writing for us.

How to Submit
·         Send me an email with the article outline before the deadline. Include as many details as possible to help me make an informed decision (for instance, mention any background stories that you plan to tie in, a list of the practical tips that will be included, references that will be used, any books that will be mentioned etc.)
·         If you have published online before, please send me a few links so I can get a sense of your writing style.
·         If your outline is accepted, send the completed article as a word document before the deadline.
·         Include the keywords “Kick-ass Article for AFP” in ALL your email subject lines. (I get a LOT of mail, so this is extremely important to ensure that you receive a prompt response from me).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1.       I missed the deadline for this month, or this month’s topic does not resonate with me. Do you by any chance have a list of the future topics?
Yes, sort of. A Fine Parent has been evolving into a true community blog and the topics we cover now are picked by our readers through a survey. A link to the response from our latest survey is online, and that should give you an idea of what we will cover next.
2.       How do you notify me about the outline?
I do my best to notify everyone of (a) the receipt of the outline and (b) the final decision. It will help immensely if you include the keywords “Kick-ass Article for AFP” in ALL your email subject lines. I receive a lot of mails and those words are part of an email filter that marks your mails as important so I can respond in a timely manner.
3.       What kind of articles are more likely to get selected?
We’ve been doing this for a few months now, and a pattern is beginning to emerge. The articles that I end up publishing are the ones where I see that you personally relate to the topic you’ve chosen to write about and hence will be able to connect more authentically and genuinely with the reader. For instance, if you are writing about how to teach kids to be compassionate, then either you’ve had to deal with your child acting unexpectedly mean, or your child has been a victim of bullying. Also, the “lessons learned”/ ”what I’m trying to do”/ ”what is working for me now” parts of your article tend to be much more real and not a riff off of a few Google search results. Think of it … You are a parent too. Which one of these would you rather read—a preachy list of things of what you must do in any given situation, or a real-life account of what another parent did in a very similar situation, their thought process, the obstacles they came up against and how they triumphed?
4.       Can I submit more than one outline?
No. Please submit only one outline per month. See #3 above. I’d rather that the focus be on quality than on quantity, and you send me that one article about the topic that most resonates with you.
If you have not written for us before or if you’ve not been a member of our community for long, please use the suggestions below to send your first outline. Also, please be sure to pick something you have personal experience with—anecdotes, unique perspectives and lessons learnt are highly valued in our community (hashed up lists compiled using Google search generally don’t make the cut). If you can bring professional advice from your day job and apply it in a clever and practical way to this month’s topic, please do—these are some of the most highly prized articles we seek out!
Approximate pay: $100 per article via PayPal with the chance for a $200 bonus at the end of the year if your piece is the most popular.

Can 5 Projects Make You Rich by Marc Charles

6:15 AM

Dear Friends:

Im a big fan of Fiverr.com.

Granted, a lot of people are trashing the site, posting bogus reviews of the site, and trying to "game" the Fiverr system.

But Fiverr is still here....and the stupid site works.

Im a top seller on Fiverr. The key to making money is by providing products and services the MARKET WANTS -- not neccessarily what YOU want.

In other words, all you need to do is research the site and try to discover the highest rated sellers in your areas of interest or expertise. THEN....develop and align your Gig with the bestsellers. You also need feedback and reviews. If you don;t have any yet, you can BUY REVIEWS on Fiverr!

Better yet......

Check out my new program called MicroGig Riches 2015! Im dead serious....you wont find ANYTHING like my program, material and course online, or on Clickbank. Its really good...and you can read all of the testimonials.

100% Money Back Guarantee -- as always :)

Have fun.

No....you probably wont get rich! But you can easily make money "on the side" with Fiverr. Let me show you how!

Marc

Weekly Writer Challenge 5 Stop Making Excuses!

We are now far enough into this challenge thing (see other challenges check down the right-hand side of the blog under Categories called Weekly Challenges) that I can tell you to step up production, people! Picture me with a whip, whipping you into writer shape. I dont want to hear your excuses!

Here are some of my excuses for only sending about 4 queries to national magazines in the last 4 years:

  1. Im pregnant
  2. Im nursing
  3. Im parenting two, three, four, now five kids
  4. Im homeschooling
  5. My husband is too cheap to let us have Internet at home
  6. Im tired
  7. My laptop died
  8. Im not organized enough
  9. I dont have a 4-year college degree
  10. My husband travels so its too hard to get any work done when I cant hold a damn thought in my head
Share your own excuses in the Comments section and know that I wont make fun of you at all! This is a venting place!

Just because I wont make fun of you doesnt mean I wont ride your sorry butt. Im giving you everything you need to succeed ... why arent you doing it? Why arent you pursuing your dream? I know I am scared of success; scared of TOO much attention; scared of making enough money to be comfortable and am afraid I will turn into a jerky princess and lose all my friends.

When I first started I was MAILING out my ONE little reprint to the few magazines I could get ahold of that I found on the Internet. I never heard back from any of them.

So think of Challenge #5 as a teensy little break. Get your files together, get your ideas together, clean up your computer and your paper system. Keep working on your queries. Knock out other jobs you have going on. Clean out your closet, go through old clothing and donate it. Whatever it takes to get your mind on the prize, do it! For me, I dont want to query until Im done with the ebook update!

Heres what I was working on the other day: getting old papers and files together in my basement ... filing by year currently. I have one helluva memoir project in store for me someday!

Spoiler alert #6: You should soon be ready to submit your first query.
Spoiler alert #7: Get a good system in place for keeping track!

I am in love with the book The Renegade Writer by Linda Formichelli and Diana Burrell. I have a dog-eared paperback copy and consult it often. Recently an author friend of mine wrote a bunch of posts on Bubblews where she takes a book about writing and breaks it down, inserting her own opinions and personal experiences! Here’s #15 of her series, which will take you to the others: http://www.bubblews.com/news/1504842-roberts-rules-of-writing-lesson-15-wave-good-bye

Heres the blog The Renegade Writer, which holds lots of inspiration for writers!

I decided to grab a bunch of the rules to break from The Renegade Writer and then write my own personal take on them based on personal experience or opinion. Definitely check out this book (link conveniently located above), because there is so much more to it. Heres part of my list (more to come!):

#1 Must Have Degree

#2 Must Have Connections

#3 Must Spend Money to Make Money

5 Ways to Stop Wasting Money

Just about everyone loves spending money. That’s the whole point of moving up in the world. Covering just your necessities doesn’t necessarily take a lot of money, but getting all the extras and the “nicer” things does. The more money you have, the more you have to spend. So, the better your job pays, the freer you are to make these purchases.

Unfortunately, it is all too easy to fall into the habit of spending outside your means, and getting yourself into financial dire straits. You can avoid the fear of getting bills you can’t pay by following a few simple steps.

  • Examine your credit situation. Credit is not a bad thing, and for some things it is essential. There are very few people who are able to go out and buy a car or house without credit. And to attain the type of credit you need to make those purchases, you have to establish a credit record through routine purchases.   However, having a vast amount of potential capital in your hands can be a dangerous thing. If you are having problems making your credit payments each month, you need to take a closer look at your spending habits. There’s no need to have multiple credit cards with a carryover balance on them. The same goes for store credit. Interest payments will drain your savings and income faster than anything. If you use credit, use it wisely. If you can’t, stop using credit now.  Don’t be tricked by credit companies’ sweet promotional offers. You may be able to use them to your advantage, but if you’re not careful, you’ll have a huge pile of debt at an outrageous interest rate that you’ll struggle forever to pay.

  • Don’t let emotions drive your shopping. Some people will shop not because they need something, but for the rush they get from the purchase. If you find yourself in this situation, you should fix the habit. It is not healthy for your psyche or wallet to shop to make yourself feel good. If you’re buying on credit, if you are not careful in how you follow through it will only make things worse later. If you like to shop as a leisure pastime, leave the credit cards at home, and only bring along money you can afford to spend. Take the time to browse without buying, or find a healthier hobby.

  • Shop around before you buy. Comparison shopping is one of the best ways you can save money on all of your purchase, especially the major ones. If you are a shopper by habit, instead of buying the first item you find, go to different stores to see where you can get the best deals. Better yet, use the internet to your advantage and save on gas money. There are numerous direct comparison sites available for all types of goods, and you can spend several hours browsing through many different stores from the comfort of your own home.

  • Again, be careful with your credit cards and accounts. The idea is to be saving money, and the best way to do that is by not spending it.

  • Avoid impulse buying. The tips up to this point should help curb this urge, hopefully. However, don’t forget when you are actually buying something that you are dealing with a salesperson. Just as you are trying to keep your money, they are trying to get it.

  • No matter how nice they may seem when they offer those special accessories you can’t live without, keep in mind that in most of these situations, this is more of a “Do you want fries with that?” proposition than anything else. Think over these little extras carefully before you add them to the list. A few “bargain” add-ons can add up quickly.

  • Think practically about what you’re spending. Before making any purchase, consider how long you’ll have to work to pay for that particular item or service. Then ask yourself, is it really worth that many hours of your life? The answer may surprise you: and be the first of many steps to saving money the easy way...by not spending it!
