10) Truck Driving Schools

I hope you got here by reading my previous posts (numbered 1 - 10) first. If not, I advise you to go back and do so. This post wont help you if you cant get the financing for a truck. If you dont understand how you will be making money (net), then I you are not ready for this step.

If, on the other hand, you understand that you will not get rich by owning your own big rig, have checked your credit report and Fico score, cleaned up all of your debt problems, and are sure you can secure a loan, then read on!

There are two types of owner operators. The one with their own authority, and the leased owner operator. For the purposes of this post, I am assuming you will be driving your own truck. If you are planning on hiring a driver you would be an owner, not an owner operator, but most of this information would still apply.

Your own AUTHORITY: This means that you are a “trucking company”. You will probably have to buy a trailer. You will have to get your own permits, and pay your own taxes. You will have to find your own freight.

The three different types authority are: Common Carrier, Contract Carrier, and Broker Authority.

COMMON CARRIERS provide for-hire truck transportation to the general public. Common carriers must file both liability (bodily injury & physical damage) insurance and cargo insurance.
The definition of an "authorized for-hire” carrier is a person or company that provides transportation of cargo or passengers for compensation. If you are a for-hire carrier, in addition to the USDOT Number you will also need to obtain an Operating Authority (MC Number).
CONTRACT CARRIERS provide for-hire truck transportation to specific, individual shippers, based on contracts. Contract carriers must file only liability (bodily injury and physical damage) insurance.

A contract carrier cannot broker loads without first applying for and receiving a license to operate as a broker of freight.

BROKERS (brokers are not owner operators) arrange for the truck transportation of cargo belonging to others, for compensation, utilizing for-hire carriers to provide the actual truck transportation. Brokers must file either a surety bond or trust fund agreement.

If you want to get your own authority, there are lots of companies that can help you, such as (OOIDA). We are members of OOIDA and have been since just after they started, about 30 years ago. They are one of the best things I have ever spent my money on. Membership dues are only $45.00 a year, but sometimes they run a special. Includes a subscription to “Land Line” magazine.  In addition to helping you get your own authority, they offer discounts and rebates on equipment, as well as financing, they have truck, health, and life insurance, a drug and alcohol consortium, retirement plans, fuel cards, load boards, business information services, and much more!

Most owner operators are leased to a trucking company – a common carrier or a contract carrier. Actually, you are not leased, your truck is. When you lease your truck to a trucking company, they provide you with services and charge you for them (see "Income and Expenses" post).

What services they provide and how much they charge you varies from company to company, so ask a lot of questions before you lease on your truck and find out exactly what they do and what you would have to do.

Some of the common services provided:
1. they buy your license plates (and usually you have to reimburse them,
2. they pay fuel taxes,
3. they buy the permits,
4. they do all the record keeping and reporting for fuel taxes and permits, and/or
5. they provide you with a trailer (charging you rent).

These are all things you would have to do and pay for yourself if you had your own authority.

You need to check with trucking companies and see if they have enough freight and if they are leasing on more trucks. Ask other drivers of the company you think you might like to lease to if they are happy (they will probably say no), how much they gross, and how much they net (they will probably lie), and if they are planning to stay with the same company they are leased to. Why did I say they will probably tell you they are unhappy? Because truckers are notorious for complaining. They complain about the dispatchers, the loads, the dispatchers, the truck, the dispatchers, the pay, and, oh, did I mention the dispatchers? So, when they tell you how unhappy they are, ask them how long they have been with that company. If it is more than a year or two, they are probably happy. I also called them liars, but in reality, they just like to stretch the truth. Most people will tell you they are doing a lot better than they really are, but then you also get those who just like to exaggerate in the other direction. Ask to see their revenue statements. A lot of them will be glad to show you.

After you have asked all of your questions, DONT sign your lease until you have read it completely and understand what it says.
You are the lessor (the party who is giving the right for the use of the equipment).  The company is the lessee (the party getting the use of the equipment).

The lease is a legal contract.  It spells out what what percentage or mileage rate they pay, what expenses you are responsible for, and what expenses they are responsible for.  It should tell you when you will be paid and how (percentage or mileage).  It will tell you who is responsible for fines, damages, and losses. It will tell you if you have to have an escrow account.
"Escrow fund – Money deposited by the lessor with either a third party or the lessee to guarantee performance, to repay advances, to cover repair expenses, to handle claims, to handle license and State permit costs, and for any other purposes mutually agreed upon by the lessor and lessee"
Although you can be required to carry insurance on your equipment, you can not be required to buy your insurance through the company you are leased to.  They can not require you to have work done in their shop, rent or buy equipment (covers anything from load locks to trucks) from them, or buy their fuel.  You are an independent, and as such have the right and option of obtaining your own services or equipment from where ever you want.  This does not mean that you cant use their equipment of services, it just means you cant be required to.

If you are being paid a percentage, you have a right to see the freight bills, showing the amount the load pays.
If you have your own authority, none of the leasing information applies to you unless 1) you lease a truck from someone else (you are the lessee) or 2) you lease your equipment to someone (you are the lessor), which you can do.

Alphabet soup definitions:

USDOT:
United States Department of Transportation
MC: Motor Carrier
FMSCA: Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration
OOIDA: Owner Operators Independent Drivers Association
ICC: Interstate Commerce Commission. An agency which used to regulate the trucking (and railroad) industry, but is no longer in existence. It was disbanded in 1995.
IRP: International Registration Plan is a registration reciprocity agreement among jurisdictions in the United States and Canada which provides for payment of (truck) license fee on the basis of fleet miles (even if it is only one truck) operated in various jurisdictions
HUT or HVUT: Heavy (Vehicle) Use Tax - A federal tax imposed annually
CDL: Commercial Drivers License
IFTA: The International Registration Plan (IRP) is a reciprocal agreement that authorizes the proportional registration among the jurisdictions (states) of commercial motor vehicles. This means if a truck is operated in multiple jurisdictions, the owner must annually report mileage driven in each state and taxes are paid proportionately based on the mileage driven. The good news is the owner may pay those taxes in one jurisdiction—referred to as the base jurisdiction or base state. Vehicle owners are required to register under IRP, if:
    • their vehicle is over 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight (GVW); or
    • has three or more axles, regardless of weight; or
    • is a power unit and trailer whose combined GVW is in excess of 26,000 pounds, and
    • your truck operates in at least two IRP jurisdictions

Offering Good Customer Service on Fiverr or Anywhere

I was so excited to see that I was the #3 rated proofreader on Fiverr after only being on a couple of months. (The new Fiverr has come out, though, and I cant figure out how buyers can search by rating, which has slowed my business considerably).

I want to share how I do this, and its really very simple.

    1. Deliver on time.
    2. Communicate part one. If you cant deliver on time, let the buyer know.
    3. Communicate part two. Put on your gig if you will be on vacation or taking some time off and that your delivery time has been extended.
    4. Be fair. If you, for example, lower your proofing word count that you will do for one gig, give previous buyers the same rate you always gave them. Keep track in Excel.
    5. Good customer service. Deliver more than you said you would. If I am proofing a book that is already on Amazon, I like to post a review as a bonus for the buyer. If I am to pin one image for one gig, I like to pin more than that if the content is well in line with my Pinterest followers.

New Books FREE or Deeply Discounted

    9:23 AM

    Greetings:

Most of my books are free or deeply discounted on Amazon this week.

    Marc Charles Books

Im a big fan of Kindle Direct Publishing. I built an entire business around the platform!

Granted, there are dozens of downsides, problems and issues with KDP. But, Ive also watched Amazon fix and eliminate hundreds of problems or glitches within a few hours or days. Amazon deserves a lot of credit.

Old World print book publishing will probably survive. Most people love print books, including me.

But Old World publishers, and especially the Big Boys in NYC -- for the most part are living in an old, overpriced system.

Digital and mobile publishing is the hot rising trend, not old world print publishing.

Is Your New Business Idea Too Complicated or Sticky by Marc Charles

    The “Sticky Business” Factor
    May 20
    7:14 AM

    Greetings:

A business partner said my idea was too “sticky”.

He meant it in a bad way. But at least he said it with a smile on his face.

My partner was referring to a business with endless tentacles, paperwork, overhead costs, government red tape and a potential lawsuit magnet.

I’m sure you’ve heard about or been involved with a “sticky” business on some level.  I tend avoid them like the plague.

That’s why I was surprised when my partner suggested my idea was too “sticky”…..the nerve.
In my launching, reviewing and advising hundreds of business ideas and products over the last 29 years or so, only a fraction of them could be considered “non-stick”.

However, that doesn’t mean sticky businesses aren’t profitable.

The “stickiest” business I ever saw was also one of the most profitable….transporting hazardous (and nuclear) waste.

The entrepreneurs who worked this venture could make $20,000 to $70,000 per load. The cost (and headaches) of running this business included retrofitted tractor trailers, maintenance (cleaning), drivers, government inspections, insurance, fuel, special licenses and certifications.
I wouldn’t recommend transporting hazardous waste for anyone without political connections, world class insurance, smart people and very deep pockets.

On top of that, you’ll need nerves of steel. My friends were threatened, shot at and their transport vehicles were sabotaged.

There is a boatload of businesses in the “non-stick” category. When I dissected the business idea I mentioned earlier for my partner he reluctantly agreed it wasn’t as “sticky” as he thought….the nerve.

Granted, nothing is “non-stick” or problem free all the time.

The bestselling “non-stick” frying pans rarely offer a money back guarantee should something stick.

A great “non-stick” business I found focuses on a hot rising trend called China.

Actually, the business focuses on Chinese products, commerce and worldwide demand. I’ll tell you about it in a second.

But first, I’d like to show you some new things developing in China right now. These things leverage the opportunity in a big way.

According the Financial Times China has opened the floodgate of cash reserves to get their “export machine” cranked up again. Apparently some Chinese (in powerful places) believe the financial crisis the last two years is receding.

Money is flowing to entrepreneurs and businesses again like it did pre-2007.

Granted, Brazil is getting the lion’s share of attention (and money) lately because they’re surpassing the US as China’s largest trading partner.

But entrepreneurs in any country can leverage the China trend and a “non-stick” business I discovered by becoming a “finder”…..more on this in a second.

    Another issue is China’s currency.

Import and export entrepreneurs are wondering if they’ll suffer a backlash over China’s currency policy. It’s a no-brainer Chinese wants to control the value of their currency (Yuan) against all other currencies.

But China’s currency has a couple of things going for it. First, China’s economy is relatively stable compared to the US and other countries, and second they have low government debt.

I’m not an economist…but a sound economy and limited government typically increases the relative value of a currency.

In real world currency trading China won’t be able to “control” much of anything, if they plan to do business with other countries.

But overall the Chinese currency should play a major role in international commerce in a good way.

China needs trading partners to survive. The country does not have the resources to be self sufficient. That’s a good thing for the “non-stick” business I found.

China needs to make and export products to the world, as well as import and consume them.

China is a living, breathing money monster which needs to be fed.

Lastly….China’s population is still growing like wildfire despite all the restrictions on having kids.

According to the World Bank China’s population was 1.3 billion in 2009 (1,356,359,928 as of January 2011).

    And get this….

Chinese planners want to merge nine cities around the Pearl River Delta in the southern part of the country. This would create the largest “mega city” in the world with a population of 42 million people. This is greater than the entire population of California (39 million)!

China has unlocked the cash vault, the population is skyrocketing and they need trading partners to survive.

    A “non-stick” business opportunity…..

The opportunity is about bringing buyers and sellers together and earning a percentage of each deal. This is also referred to as an import export “finder”.

I saw this opportunity in action the first time in Wausau Wisconsin.

The entrepreneur was making money as a “finder” connecting buyers in China with sellers in the US. His product was the herb ginseng. The buyers were Chinese distributors and retail stores.

The herb ginseng is still wildly popular in China.

The import export “finder” opportunity is one of the hottest “non-stick” opportunities around.

By “non-stick” I ‘m referring to a business minus the tentacles, paperwork, inventory, buildings, employees (unless you want them), red tape, and massive overhead costs.
When you’re a “finder” you match buyers with sellers or visa versa and make money if and when a transaction is completed.

In most cases a “finder” simply facilitate deals or makes introductions to prospective partners.
And the best part is the lawsuit magnet aspect is almost eliminated.
Granted, one downside to this business is the learning curve…..and don’t kid yourself, it takes time. There are no exceptions if you want to learn this business.

But in my research I stumbled on a website which can accelerate the learning curve a hundred fold.

On top of that, I was so impressed with the impact the site, market and trend was having on entrepreneurs I developed what became known as the Importing Fortunes.

Importing Fortunes is the most comprehensive resource library, how to course and interactive community in the world. See what entrepreneurs are saying about it here.

China is on the move again and there’s money to be made.

China was crippled by the financial turmoil over the past two years just like every else. But they’ve opened the cash spigot enabling companies to import and export products again!

In addition, there are more than 114,000 importers and exporters registered on AliExpress.com right now.

There are more than a million companies and entrepreneurs registered on Alibaba.com.

Most of these companies and entrepreneurs are aggressively seeking business partners and deals as we speak.

People have compared AliExpress and Alibaba.com to eBay.

    But the comparison is weak.

eBay focuses on the consuming masses. And eBay is a great place to sell imported products!

AliExpress and Alibaba.com focus on businesses and entrepreneurs.

This is one of the great “non-stick” business opportunities of the 21st century.

Is the opportunity a good fit for you? I’m not sure. But it’s worth a “peak”.

    IStockPhoto Exclusive or Not

Should I become an IStockPhoto Exclusive, or not? That is the question, and will always be the question among all stock contributors. I have got the answer today, and it is... "Yes and no, depends".

What is IStockPhoto Exclusive? IStockPhoto Exclusive means that a contributor can only upload his stocks to IStockPhoto and he shall not sell it elsewhere. The advantages and disadvantages of being an IStockPhoto Exclusive are listed below:

    Advantages.
    1. Your stocks price will be about 40% higher.
    2. Your royalty percentage is higher as well.
    3. IStockPhoto will rank your stocks higher in its search engine.
    4. The reviewer will review your stocks in a shorter time.
    5. The reviewer will be more lenient in accepting your stocks.
    6. You got a crown icon at your profile, and you will be respected more (at IStockPhoto).
    7. They will help you to fight against infringement.
    Disadvantages.
    1. Very high risk, because IStockPhoto can change to a new plan that does not favor you. They can change this anytime they want.
    2. You cannot sell your stocks elsewhere. This means you may have not maximized your earnings.
Wait. There are 20 other microstock agencies out there. Shouldnt there be no argument at all that my earnings will be maximized if I sell to all of them, instead of IStockPhoto solely? NOT NECESSARY.

Yes, there are 20 other microstock agencies out there, but only 4 of them are making significant earnings. They are Shutterstock, Dreamstime, Fotolia, and GraphicRiver. The rest are almost hopeless at the current state.

Let me get you straight to the fact. One top vector can make you about $5000 a year at a combined sales of all other stock agencies, while a decent vector at IStockPhoto can make you about $20000 a year. There is no secret that a vector can has the biggest revenue at IStockPhoto if it sells.

Below are some examples of IStockPhoto Exclusives work that has generated a revenue of over $40000 in 1-2 years.

    http://www.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/5513900/2/istockphoto_5513900-men-s-t-shirt.jpg

2400 downloads to date since March 2008.
    Each download is 20 credits.
    Per credit is about $1.30.

    http://www.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/8183121/2/istockphoto_8183121-communication-icons-satin-series.jpg

6900 downloads to date since June 2009.
    Each download is 14 credits.
    Per credit is about $1.30.

Now, is there any Independent Contributor (Independent Contributors means you are not exclusive anywhere) has made that much with a single vector? Not very possible.

So, why the hell are we still being Independent Contributors? The reason is simply because many of our best sellers (elsewhere) are not being accepted by IStockPhoto. There are many type of vectors that IStockPhoto dont accept. Here is an example of one of my best seller elsewhere.

stock vector : Kitchen Utensils Set Vector

The above kitchen set utensils is one of my bestseller (elsewhere) because I have combined all of these fine looking tools together and they look worthy by "being together". However, IStockPhoto rejected it because they think knife, cutlery, spatula, and scissor should not be group together, and they should be split into smaller groups. Ohh, ok... so lets split them up since there will be more artworks for me to sell, right? But no, my style of artworks dont work this way. When I split them up, they will look less-worthy and nobody will want to buy it anymore. See the below and you will feel it.

Click on thumbnail to zoom in.
2 sales since May 2010 at IStockPhoto.
    10 credits per download.

Fortunately, the big group below is accepted by IStockPhoto, and they didnt say that ruler, protractor, and compass do not belong together. So, I have got a better sales :)

Click on thumbnail to zoom in.
17 sales since May 2010 at IStockPhoto.
    15 credits per download.

Imagine, if I were to split the above mathematical instruments into smaller group, how will they look like? And will it look worthy anymore? I guess no, because this arent great artwork. They only look good by being together. Imagine if the 3 compasses below were to be an artwork of its own, it will look awfully cheap.

Now, lets go back to the original question. To be, or not to be an IStockPhoto Exclusive?

If you are very good at producing super super super vector, then you should be an IStockPhoto Exclusive. If you are an average-skilled illustrator like me, then you should not become an IStockPhoto Exclusive because most of your work will go down to drain. IStockPhoto rejection rate is very high. Below are some of my bestseller (elsewhere) that IStockPhoto will not accept for sure.

stock vector : Barbecue BBQ Silhouette Set Vector
1st rejection reason: Split them up and resubmit, please.
(After you split them up and resubmit)
2nd rejection reason: We dont accept silhouette anymore.
(What a waste of time to have asked me to resubmit)

stock vector : Web Design Element Frame Template
1st Rejection reason: Delete the text and resubmit, please.
(After you delete the text and resubmit)
2nd Rejection reason: We dont think it is suitable for our stock.
(What a waste of time to have asked me to resubmit)

So, why dont I produce artwork that IStockPhoto can accept? Yes, I can, but with my current skills, I am not able to produce super super super vector, and thus there will be no sale on my stock. Moreover, I like to produce easy stuff like abstract, web design elements, silhouette, and etc, and the buyers at other agency are still buying them although they are not top in quality.

That is why whether you should become an IStockPhoto Exclusive or not is highly depend on your skills. If you are super good, IStockPhoto Exclusive is your route to millionaire. If you are not that good, you may want to consider joining the other agencies below:

    Shutterstock,
    Dreamstime,
    Fotolia,
    and GraphicRiver

Until then, good bye for today.

Without wasting much time, lets get down to business
Facebook as we all know is one of the major social networks in the world having over
600 million users registered and still growing. Because of the large amount of people on
this network, it is now a very big potential place for marketers to sell and promote their
product. Whether you are a business owner, internet marketer, consultant, affiliate
marketer etc, you can easily get assess to lots of customer through facebook which is
the reason of you reading this report now to learn the 5 simple ways you can sell your
product on facebook for almost zero naira.
As you can see the title of this special report, I said almost zero capital because out of
the 5 ways I will be showing you on how to sell or promote your product or service only
one of them will actually involve you using money while the remaining four are free.
    Here they are
    Using facebook profile (free)
    Using facebook page (free)
    Using facebook event (free)
    Using facebook application (free)
    Using facebook ads (paid)
    www.facebook.com/naijaebookstore
    1. Using facebook profile
You might be familiar with this already but you might not have been conscious of the
fact that you can use this to sell your product or service directly to your friends. Have
you notice in your news feed whereby one of your friend place a picture of a product
like laptop, car, phone etc to sell to those that are interested in it. Same way here is the
same way you can sell your own product or service and even give out a free report if
you have one to give and the best part of it is that if it is something that people will fall
in love with immediately, they will like your post which will now be seen in all of their
friends news feed causing your product to reach a wider audience. All you just have to
do to make sure that your friends on facebook to want to visit or click the link is how
catchy and attractive you make the post to be. One simple to make sure that your post
on the profile page gets noticed is to make sure that the post is something interesting
and catchy. This alone will make the difference between your post and other who are
also selling similar products or services online.
    2. Using facebook page
Lots of people and business owners are now creating facebook pages to promote their
business or to build up their brand, through the use of facebook page which you can
easily create at http://www.facebook.com/page/create.php and the best part of it is
that when you have 25 likes on your page you will be able to customize your page to
make it much more unique like http://www.facebook.com/naijaebookstore and easily
use that link to drive traffic through advertisement either online or offline. But what you
have to note is that you have to promote your page to a wider set of people to really
sell your product. For example in http://www.facebook.com/naijaebookstore the owner
who happens to be me is selling downloadable product which people will have to
request for and all this was done for next to zero naira. (More on this later). Anytime
you make a post on this pages, it will automatically reflect in the newsfeed of those that
    www.facebook.com/naijaebookstore
have like your page which automatically make the friends of those who like you page to
see your post and also like your page or even buy your product or service that you are
    offering.
NOTE: just from this http://www.facebook.com/naijaebookstore i have made over
N20,000 and I started all this in less than 10 days of selling ebooks using this page and
also whenever any of them need any downloadable product they come to me. So you
can see how using facebook page to sell your product easily. Apart from creating simple
facebook pages, you can even customize it to your taste with the new application
iframe that can allow you to use customized picture for your page.(visit
www.advancefacebookcourse.blogspot.com for more details about this)
    3. Using facebook event.
You can easily use facebook event to sell or promote your product. If you are seling a
particular item, just create a special promo using the event whereby you will use that to
inform them about your product or service through the promo and when they make
there mind on attending the event, you will just use that to redirect them to where you
want them to go. It may be a link to site(this can even be used to send traffic to your
adesense, cpa or affiliate site). After creating the event and adding your friend on
facebook to inform them about your event you will be able to send them personal
message in which you will now also put your link to your site to your product you want
to sell. You can read how I use the facebook event to get people to know about my
blog and ebook store at http://imclassroom.com/forum/index.php/topic,82.165.html (I
will advice you join this forum as it will especially help you if you are new to internet
    marketing/online business).
    4. Using facebook application.
    www.facebook.com/naijaebookstore
This is still something a lot of people still do not know about which a friend of mine
happen to stumble upon when looking for ways to promote his clickbank product. What
he simply did was to create a facebook application to distribute a free report to his
facebook friends which was very successful. If you are looking to sell your product
through facebook, you can easily create a viral marketing campaign through the use of
facebook application which is very easy to create.
NOTE: how his campaign was successful is that before anyone can get the free report,
they will have to share the link on their facebook newsfeed for their friend to see of
which if any of their friend also need the information he will have to share the link also
before he can get assess to the information making the application to instantly go viral.
(read the end of this post). Let me ask you a question here about how you would want
your viral marketing to grow on facebook if you are to use application,
    · You share the link to your free report or product on your Facebook friend’s wall
and anyone can visit your website and download your free report OR
    · You share the link to your free report on your Facebook friend’s wall and
everyone who wants to download your report has to share the same link on his
own wall to download the report and visitors coming from that link also have to
    do the same.
To know the full details of how you can use facebook application to create your viral
    marketing campaign, visit www.advancefaceboookcourse.blogspot.com
    5. Facebook ads
This is where you will have to pay some money to advertise your products or service on
facebook. Using the facebook advertising platform, you will be able to display your
product immediate to targeted audience who will want your product and the best part is
    www.facebook.com/naijaebookstore
that you will only be charged when any of those customer click on your advert and
facebook advert is very cheap if you really know your way around it as you can use just
between $10-$20 to drive traffic to your site daily. In using facebook ads, creativity is
needed to make sure that when your targeted audience sees your ads, they will always
want to click on it to see what you have to offer them. Your picture must also be
something that will also interest them to want to click on your advert.
There you have, the 5 simple ways you can use facebook to sell your products or
    services with almost zero naira.
Before I go I will like to stress the fact that most people do not know that for them to
succeed online, they must know how their list as there is the popular saying that money
is in the list, you can do this by using all of the above to build your email list by giving
