Stay on Top of Sending Your Article Reprints Where Im Published This Month

So I wrote a couple of Mothers Day pieces. One on Mothers Day dilemmas and how to solve them and one on Mothers Day traditions. They did pretty well the first year then I let them rot. I am not the most organized person in the world but I try. Life gets going and I forget to send my articles out and often wish I had an assistant who could get in my face and tell me to send articles annually when they are wanted.

***Hmmm, I finally sucked it up and got a smartphone ... Im thinking I could grab all my article titles (there are over 75 at this point) and figure out when best to send them. At least the holiday-specific and back-to-school ones. I could plug them in my calendar somehow to remind me to send them out.

Anyway ... this year I grabbed the Mothers Day articles from my hard drive and sent each one out separately to all my contacts that are in my book since I was updating the book anyway. That one little action made me at least $250.

For two pieces I wrote years ago.

All I did was mass submit them. Not one at a time emailing, friend. Like blind carbon copy.

Some publications wrote me back and let me know they wanted to use my piece and what they would pay. Some I found while checking my name on issuu.com or Googling the article name. Some emailed me after they used it and let me know they were sending a check.

Where do I write? You want proof? Okey dokey. Palm Beach Parenting, San Diego Family, Calgarys Child, Central Penn Parent, Valley Parent Georgia, Western New York Family. Thats just this month that I know about.

Yes, I am telling you to buy my book. I make money using it 6 years later. I could be making a lot more money using it if I didnt have so many other things going on in my life. And dont think for a second that I take up all the space in these magazines. They needs tons of pieces every month and are dying for good content. There is success for all of us. Money for all of us. A writing career for all of us, writer friend!

Heres the book! You gotta get it and tell your friends! I make the same royalty whether you get the print or ebook version and I recommend the print version so you can mark it up and make changes to it.

Roughing Up Other Writers Im an Article Bouncer!

I like to get really drunk and rough up other writers online. I punch their articles right out of other magazines. (just kidding!)

So a fellow writer wrote me and said this (Ive edited the email severely so its definitely not a quote but its such a great story I had to share ... then below that is my response to her):

Hi Kerrie,

Just wanted to share with you a funny story because I think you bumped me right out of a spot in  the XXX Family Magazine August issue...!!

I sent Jane Editor an essay about blahdy blah way back in November and she liked it so she asked me to follow up with her closer to the summer months.  I followed up in May and she said she would schedule it for the August issue.  I didnt hear back from her again and wondered what happened so I took a look at the August issue online and found your wonderful article on the magazines blog instead!  Doh!

So, Im happy for you!  But sad for me...oh well.  I know I have to keep putting myself out there but this writing business is killing me...I get some great feedback from editors who say they love my stuff and want to/plan to print it, but then I never hear from them again.

The same thing happened with the XXX Magazine where an editor planned to print a commentary I wrote and asked for revisions and everything. She followed up and told me she planned to print my piece within the next two weeks...and that was back in January.  Dang thing never saw the light of day.  UGH!

Heres my response:

That stinks. Sorry about that. Ive always had problems with THAT EDITOR doing that ... I open it up expecting to see something she said of mine she would use and then its not there.

I think you have to keep bugging her, which I dont always have time to do. Now they are switching editors ... if the email changes Ill send out an update if you subscribe to the blog emails.

Hoping NEW Jane Editor will be all on top of it. All I can offer is KEEP TRYING. The only reason Im in something monthly is that I have about 70 pieces going at once on a reprint list. The odds are ever in my favor, you know? Keep it up. We are all basically writing the same stuff ... its not even always about who did it better ... just who is top of mind or which pub has the more organized editor. I am putting this on the blog ... to maybe help encourage others?????

Keep at it!!!!!!!!!!!! Or just scrap the RPMs and go for the nationals. Maybe thats your thing instead!

Putting My Book to Work Where Im Published in June 2015 ParentingMagazineWriting

I like to let you know where Im published each month not to brag, but to let you know you can also be doing it. To let you know that if you dont quit and you keep going, you will succeed! Check out my #30Submissions30Days challenge here! And of course you can do exactly what Im doing if you buy my book here on Amazon!

1. After pitching for years to Birmingham Parent, they picked up my 8 Tips for Saving on Birthday Gifts for June 2015 and I could not be more excited!

2. About Families used my Birthday Party Excess piece, inspired by all the over-the-top, expensive parties that go down these days when I am doing good just to have a simple, at-home party for each of my own 5 kids!

3. Space City Publishing (several magazines in Texas) used Lemonade Stand Learning, inspired by watching my kids do lemonade stands one summer and all the cool things they learned doing so.

4. Bermuda Parent is using Lemonade Stand Learning, Bust Indoor Boredom, Birthday Traditions with Kids and Travel with Kids.

5. Cincinnati Parent is using Birthday Traditions, inspired by fun things I like to do with my own kids.

6. First Time Parent is an app magazine on your smartphone, and they used my piece on Double Diapering, about using both cloth AND paper diapers (not at the same time!).

7. Atlanta Parent used Pregnancy Sleep Solutions, a piece I wrote forever ago, and Lemonade Stand Learning. (Im glad I sent out that lemonade piece again this year!)

8. Baton Rouge Parents used The No-Gift Birthday Party, inspired by kids who dont want a gift but instead want to have a party at an animal shelter or do some other cool thing to give back instead of acquiring more stuff.

9. Toledo Area Parent News used Eating Organic on a Budget (also have never worked with Toledo Area Parent so this is a new one for me and Im so thrilled!)

Im Writing for a Penny a Word

Im cringing as you read this, but I have done something I said I would never do. And I did it because my kids all like their little weekly gymnastics class.

I wrote for a penny a word. I wrote 10 pieces that were 250+ words. I put my kids to bed then stayed up til 1 a.m. finishing up something, a topic that put me to sleep. A topic I did not feel strongly about and maybe didnt even agree with.

And I would probably do it again.

I mean, if it supplements my reprint income from writing for the regionals, why not?

So I made sure the others in these writing groups knew about my ebook. Because if they can write ANYTHING for a penny a word, they can certainly come up with something interesting in the parenting and family arena.

And I am soooo not a heartless, money-hungry witch. I definitely have a sort of Hardship Program, if you will. I offer a deep discount on my ebook, all you have to do is ask. I just want to get it into the hands of those who need it! I love my fellow writers and want to die with a clear conscience!

STILL working on the 5th edition! Got this cool cover made at Fiverr.com for 5 bucks!!!
